SO WHY SHOULD YOU GARDEN?
1. Gardening stops your brain shrinking.
Every hour you spend gardening is an hour spent not watching rubbish on television, not talking drivel in the pub while sucking salty nuts off the counter and pickling your bewildered brain in booze, and not reading articles about celebrities and their dopey exploits and boring backsides.
2. Gardening stops your waist expanding.
Every hour you spend gardening is an hour not spent eating fried pizza, cack-cake, eye-ball burgers or hoovering up crisps from the corner of the packet and washing it down with chateau sugar-juice.
3. Gardening boosts your confidence.
Ever hour you spend gardening is an hour not spent reading magazines featuring celebrities whose perfectly photo-shopped bodies make you feel like a frumpy, podgy blob. Or watching diet shows where you know everyone will gain back that forty stones they lost in that six week ‘healthy eating’ program they were sentenced to.
4. Gardening improves your health.
Every hour you spend gardening is an hour spent walking (wear a step-counter and watch as thousands of steps rack up your totals), weight lifting (those watering cans are heavy) stretching (across your vegetable bed to pluck that tasty young carrot) and loads of free fresh air to help you shift all that stale indoor stuff and give your lungs a break.
5. Gardening improves your mood.
Every hour you spend gardening is like injecting yourself with the strongest feel-good drug you can imagine and the best thing is it’s addictive and unlike certain other feel-good drugs the more addicted you get to gardening the better you feel.
So now you know – what are you waiting for? Plant something.
Best wishes
Grace
P.S. The lovely singer and poet, Denise Baxter Yoder, had so many great things to say about this she actually wrote a poem. You can read her poetry in the garden here.
