WORLD FOOD DAY

WORLD FOOD DAY – CELEBRATIONS

Tomorrow is World Food Day, which is celebrated around the globe to mark the day the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded back in 1945

This year the theme is ‘Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition. Past themes have included ‘Fighting Hunger and Malnutrition.’ (1996) and ‘The Right To Food’ (2007) I hate to be cynical but it seems to me that these worthy goals haven’t made much of a difference.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

But then it’s easy to mock, but it is actually quite difficult to make a difference on any kind of global level.

Maybe what we can do is to try and make some small difference in our own lives.

Maybe we could celebrate World Food Day by planting something to eat. Even a pot of cress or some herbs on a windowsill is a good start and kids enjoy seeing thing growing.

I celebrated by going down to the bay on my trike to collect some seaweed for my garden.

On the way back I collected some free food. I got some apples from a wild tree just down the lane.

I found some Water mint growing just below the hedgerows and, of course there were lots of Blackberries and Rose hips.

I know this isn’t going to solve world hunger but collecting food like this puts you in touch with nature and the seasons and that makes you think!  If we all did this maybe that would make a difference…
