Growing Peas in Raised Beds

Growing peas in raised beds is surprisingly easy and the great thing is that you don’t have to buy ‘real’ raised beds you can use containers, tyres, old boats – anything that will hold soil.

I started the peas and some broad beans you see below on the window sills in the sunniest room in my house.

We managed to get all the pea plants and broad bean plants into the first of the raised beds, which at the moment is their designated home.

We will change the beds around next year to rotate the crops.

We also sowed some pea seeds as well.

Since I am quickly learning how easy it is to fill up a raised bed I am also looking for other spots to grow peas around the place.

We both love peas and I have lots more in the packet plus lots of space in the garden.

With our wild and rocky Galway garden, every time we want to plant something we have to move piles of stones, huge rocks, and the odd boulder.

After that we start the digging, pulling out scutch grass, briar and other extra strong weeds…

Or, since I have been reading up on how to grow vegetables I could try the easy ‘no-dig’ method and just press the pea seeds into the soil below the fence and see what happens to seeds grown the lazy way.

UPDATE – the no-dig experiment failed in our garden. Too rocky?

I did find some other locations for peas and you can read about those peas here.

To keep the peas in place and bearing in mind the strong coastal winds, I made sturdy 5 stick supports from bamboo canes.

I would have preferred to use found twigs and sticks from around the area but I just haven’t quite collected enough of them yet.

Never mind the main thing is to hope that by August the canes and branches are all dripping with bulging pods and that I’ll be busy harvesting peas.
