Growing Courgettes

flowerpotman

I have been growing courgettes for the last few years because they are easy to grow and taste great in stir-fries.

This year, as usual, I started my courgettes from seed. I sowed them last March, in window boxes around the house.

Usually, I have great success growing courgettes straight  from seed and I have often ended up with too many plants and then later on, too many courgettes – both great complaints.

DRIVE-BY COURGETTE DROPS

In the past, I had so many to give away that people hid when they saw they me coming with my bulging bag and I have had to resort to leaving them on doorsteps and running away and sometimes even doing drive-by courgette drops!

Anyway, that didn’t happen this year and for some reason I only courgette-on-vineended up with a few plants that didn’t all do too well – with one or two exceptions.

I think it is down to my soil, which is very poor here on Galway Bay and since we are close enough to the Burren to share its landscape – this means we have rocks – an awful lot of rocks!

However, I am building up my soil in preparation for growing courgettes next year – by adding compost, seaweed and any organic matter I can get my mitts on, so hopefully I will be back to doing my drive-by courgette drops by this time next year.

Bye for now.

Grace
