GARDEN DIARY – JANUARY

This is my first entry in the 2016 garden diary this year and I’m afraid to say that this year hasn’t got off to a very good start for me and my garden. It has been raining in Galway practically every day since last November and seems set to continue.

Many areas around Galway and in Ireland generally have been flooded with many homeowners finding themselves either marooned, or with their homes and land destroyed. Some are putting this down to the loss of our trees and hedgerows.

Luckily for us, we have escaped a watery destruction. Many fields near us have been turned into lakes, with the excess water escaping onto the roads, but not of it has come near our property, and for this I am truly thankful.

Usually at this time of year I have cleared my vegetable beds and covered them in a mix of seaweed, manure and my home-made compost. I normally do this before Christmas but this year the rain made it impossible.

I did manage to get some bulbs planted in the boat and in the pots around the house, so there is some hope of daffodils and tulips in the spring.  I am hoping they provide a much needed respite from the grey sky. I think we all need a burst of a colour after such a grim winter.

I only managed to get one vegetable bed cleared and plant a few garlic bulbs before the heavy rain and winds sent me back indoors, and so my other vegetable beds remain neglected.

The beds in the rose garden are a mess as well. The heavy wind has whipped some of the plants practically to death and my heart sinks as I look out on the mountain of work I have to do.

We were forecast some better weather this weekend and I planned to make a head start on the vegetable garden at least, but I have come down with a bout of flu with a sore throat and earache and so the only thing I am planning now is a nap as I am currently typing this from my bed.

So, sorry I don’t have something better to write about in the garden diary this month, but I console myself that I should be counting my blessings. I am so lucky that my home and garden were not flooded and there is always time ahead .

Bye for now and best of luck with your garden.

Grace
