 FREE RANGE CHICKENS ROCK!

M’s fan club.

Our free range chickens have been with us a few weeks now. I must admit they are much less work than I originally thought. Although I probably should admit that the fact that M has taken on the task of chicken-care completely, may have something to do with it. I do help though, I point to the places in the garden where I want the chicken poo/straw mixture dumped. I am using it as compost in preparation for a much dreamed about future rose garden! (Dream it and they will come applies to roses too!)

Free range chickens dig digging. That was the first thing we learned about our new chickens, the second thing was that what they produce is far from being chicken-shit, and the third thing is that they all have distinct little personalities!

Actually, I have come to think that the best thing about free range chickens is their personalities. Now, I know everyone says don’t get too attached to your chickens, and don’t give them names – well guess what…

INTRODUCING…

So firstly, let me introduce Simon Cowell, he earned his name because of his walk – he walks exactly like Simon Cowell. In fact the first time I saw that Simonish strut, I put my best wellies and lippy on, and broke out into my special version of Wind Beneath My Wings!

THE SOUND OF NO HENS CLUCKING

Despite my efforts, I mustn’t have nailed it. Simon said it was all too ‘mum at a wedding,’ and he gave me the famous: get the men in the white coats look. So I slithered out of the coup to the deafening sound of no hens clucking. (Could have been worse though, he could have said I was like a Nan at a wedding!) Anyway, here he is below with his fellow judge – giving his verdict on my performance.

The second name goes to this gorgeous girl – below right. I decided to name her Malteser, not because she is a little bit chocolaty but because after my rejection by the aforementioned Simon Cowell I confess I resorted to pecking at a bag of my favourite comfort sweets – Maltesers.

The third name was given to this snowdrop hen below. She wasn’t named until yesterday. I had been trying to think of something all week with no cluck, but when I saw Lady Gaga wearing her lovely fluffy white dress I knew there was no other name for this egg-laying-ball-of fluff. Isn’t she cute?

And last, but not least, comes the one and only Chuck Berry. I heard him singing when I was looking at this hen. Anyone who is old enough to remember him will know that this is a song that always makes you smile and so does this hen.
