A Rainy Day in Galway Bay

cows peeping over a stone wall on a rainy day in GalwayI had great plans to spend today in the garden.

I was going to finish clearing three of my four raised vegetable beds, lop some branches from the willow tree in the front garden.

In addition I also needed to do a bit of mulching around the overgrown septic tank area which we hope to turn into a rose/flower garden – one day.

However it is lashing rain, and the sky is grey and ominous.

Instead of working in the garden I am indoors writing about the garden.

Interestingly, writing about the garden motivates me to be out there working and in some ways writing this holds me to account.

I have talked about my plans for the garden a lot on this blog so if nothing changes, I feel like I have been telling porkies.

I am also starting to notice how our little flock of chickens are starting to assert their personalities and make their own little demands.

We have been letting them out to forage around the garden. The hope is that they act like proper little permaculture chickens and dig and poo in the many places where digging and pooing are very much needed – if the ground is to be prepared for next years plan – a rose garden!

Of course, they don’t go where they are needed. The little cluckers go straight for the areas I have already mulched with cardboard and seaweed, and they cluck around in that.

They always make sure to scatter the seaweed all over the path while they are at it.

Since it was slipping on seaweed that broke my leg into two places last year, this doesn’t amuse me.

I have tried warning them by showing them my roasting pan and a large packet of Paxo but they just tell me to cluck off!

THE MOST EXPENSIVE EGGS IN IRELAND

So it looks like we will have to invest in some kind of moveable fence.

Good job we are not doing this to make money because by the time you buy your coup, run, food etc., the eggs they produce must be the most expensive in Ireland.

Still I must admit their antics are fun really so I decided to forgive the little cluckers and just be grateful for my daily egg!

Bye for now from Galway  – hope the weather’s better where you are.

P.S. Despite everything, keeping hens is a joy and if you would like to read about my experience click here.
